Finding your next dollar of growth: five questions to answer first

James (Jip) Inglis · October 1, 2026 · 5 min read

Before changing the marketing plan, answer five questions about customers, markets, and economics. The answers usually point straight at the biggest opportunity.

When growth slows, the instinct is to do more: more campaigns, more channels, more content. Sometimes that works. More often, the biggest opportunity is hiding in a question nobody has asked recently. Before changing the plan, we work through five.

1. Who are our best customers — really?

Not the biggest names, but the customers who buy most profitably, stay longest, and refer others. Most organizations find that a small group of segments produces a large share of profit. Growing those segments is usually easier than winning new ones.

2. Why do they choose us — in their words?

Customers rarely describe your value the way your marketing does. Interviews, reviews, sales notes, and support conversations reveal the language they actually use — and the reasons they almost didn't buy. AI now makes it practical to synthesize hundreds of these in days rather than months.

3. Where is the market moving?

Size the segments you serve and the ones adjacent to them. Which are growing? Where are competitors weak or absent? A simple market map often shows that the fastest path to growth is one step sideways, not a leap into something new.

4. Where do we lose people?

Every customer journey has leaks: prospects who never hear of you, leads who stall, customers who leave. Measuring each stage shows where a small improvement would move revenue most. Fixing a leak is often cheaper than pouring in more at the top.

5. What would it take to test it?

Good growth ideas deserve a fast, inexpensive test before a full rollout. Define what success looks like, run the test in a contained market or segment, and let the results decide what scales.

Putting it together

Answering these five questions takes weeks, not months. The result is a short list of opportunities ranked by size and effort — and a plan to go after the best one first.

That's exactly what our Growth Assessment does in two to three weeks. If you'd like a second set of eyes on your next dollar of growth, let's talk.
